Stemill is a program developed for the purpose of simulating the steady state performance of an open or closed grinding circuit consisting of a ball mill and one or more hydro-cyclones. The program uses a lumped ball mill model and a Rao-Linch cyclone model, modified appropriately to describe general plant operation. Residence time distributions for the ball mill can take on a variety of forms according to a mixers-in-series model. The unique feature of this program is that it takes into account the dimensions of the mill, ball loading and critical speed to obtain the power draft of the mill which in turn is introduced in the ball mill model for predicting the grinding kinetics and resulting size distribution produced for various operating conditions. The output options of the program include a complete mass balance of the closed circuit for one operating condition or a comparison of the product size distribution produced during closed circuit (or open circuit) operation for a specified set of feed rates.
